〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Negan
CHARACTER AGE: 50
CANON ORIGIN: The Walking Dead
CHRONOLOGY: Season 8, episode 16 -- Wrath
CLASS: Villain…? But like, he’s definitely a hero in his own mind.
HOUSING: Random me up!

BACKGROUND: The Walking Dead universe starts out similar to our world as far as technology and necessities go. But as soon as the zombie apocalypse takes hold, the world becomes quickly stripped of resources and barren. If a section of a city isn't overrun by the dead, then it's very likely destroyed, raided, or charred. This post-apocalyptic universe provides little hope for the living to survive. And while we follow the main protagonist Rick Grimes and his revolving group members, the viewer gets to see as this world sinks further and further into despair.

It isn’t until the end of season 6 that we get introduced to Negan -- a leader who has taken a different approach to surviving the apocalypse. He runs a group called the Saviors, and the way they operate is by finding groups of survivors and forcing them into an arrangement where they give over half of their belongings in exchange for protection.

You can read more about his wacky adventures with Rick and co here!

PERSONALITY: Arrogant but charismatic, cruel but inspiring, a dominating presence but in some cases fair -- Negan is a mixed bag of traits that in some ways make him a good leader and in others make him a tyrant. In his mind, he is the hero of his own story. He is ‘saving’ people. Yet he chooses to dominate through fear. It is a running theme throughout most of his interactions. For instance, in order to get a group to atone for crimes against the Saviors, Negan will usually kill one of their members to make an example of them and to have the others fall into line. Another example is the way things run in the compound itself. There are a strict set of rules that must be followed and if anyone breaks those rules, Negan will call a meeting where (depending upon the severity of the rule), he will either burn the side of someone’s face with a hot iron or murder them with Lucille.

And let’s talk about his unhealthy obsession with Lucille for a moment. Negan personifies his barbed wire bat to a point where if anyone unauthorized touches ‘her’ or harms ‘her’ -- he loses his mind. There was one point where someone shot at Negan, and the bullet pierced Lucille. This was the first time we saw Negan fly into an absolute rage. And as a consequence, he had the woman’s face cut and ordered someone to be killed. We find out later on he named Lucille after his wife. According to him, he treated his wife like shit but she ‘got him through.’ And because the bat ‘got him through’ the apocalypse, he named it after her. By being fiercely protective of his bat, Negan believes in some way he can keep some part of his wife alive. It’s definitely not a sane coping mechanism, but it has helped him to survive nevertheless.

Speaking of his wife, in this new life Negan built at the compound, he has decided to take multiple wives, claiming he can rewrite the rules of what is considered normal. In a conversation he has with Father Gabriel, he makes it clear he has a problem with fidelity and he had cheated on Lucille, even though he loved her and even though she was sick with a terminal illness. So to solve this problem, he has created something of a little harem for himself of ‘wives.’ These wives are all consenting. Negan makes it very clear that he is highly against rape when one of his men attempts to rape a female prisoner and Negan murders him on the spot. Although things do get a bit dubious since some of the women have agreed to “marry” Negan simply to protect men they loved in the sanctuary or to get a higher standing. So while he would not physically force himself on someone, he doesn’t quite seem to realize what is wrong with what he does either.

But moving on toward more positive traits, Negan is an extremely charismatic guy. He is funny, charming in a way, and likable. Of course, not many characters canonically like him since he is meant to be the antagonist (and they each have their very specific reasons), but there are also many people in the sanctuary who follow Negan, not out of fear but loyalty. One of the ways Negan operates is by breaking down individuals and forcing them to adopt the identity of ‘Negan’ -- to claim that they are Negan, and everyone in the compound is Negan. There are a few who reluctantly say these words, but most of the Saviors will say it proudly which means Negan must be inspiring to a point.

Most of the time, Negan is pretty jovial and full of good humor. Sometimes that humor can be out of place or inappropriate, but no one’s about to tell him to stop! There are, surprisingly, points where Negan will stop himself when he realizes he goes too far. An example is when he is poking fun at Carl’s missing eye and Carl starts to cry, Negan realizes his error and genuinely apologizes. But for the most part, he won’t care. He will crack a joke about someone’s eye popping out of their head while he’s beating them with Lucille. And this could be for one of two reasons -- either he is using humor to bring levity to a grim situation (because let’s face it, all they have in The Walking Dead universe are grim situations) OR he is using this as a tactic to help break people down. If he is joking while he is murdering someone people care about, it does make the situation just that much worse.

Last but not least, Negan does make a good leader. He is excellent at strategizing and does provide for his people. Those who show bravery, even at times to the point of defiance, will earn his respect. He has a system for managing the several communities protected by the Saviors and until Rick started to cause problems, no one went hungry or lacked the things they needed. Of course, the Saviors are the ones who get the most and benefit the most, but Negan does hold firm to his belief that “people are a resource” so he does not want the people working with him and for him to die. Ultimately, while Negan does give off vibes or a dictator or a cult leader, in a zombie apocalypse setting? This sort of leadership kind of works to keep the most people alive...

POWER:

Summoning Lucille: When not in use, Negan’s bat will enter a void where it can be summoned to him no matter where he is and what he’s doing. Conversely, he can also send it away -- even if someone else has their hands on it. When in this void, Lucille will be restored to pristine and brand new, no matter how bloodied or damaged.

Fear Consumption: Negan will almost be like a vampire -- only instead of feeding on blood, he feeds on fear. This will not affect the other person in any way (apart from him having to intimidate them for a while to get them in this frightful state), but it serves to make Negan stronger. The strength will manifest in two ways. A physical strength -- making Negan stronger or healing up minor pains and injuries. Or he can store it to give him enough strength to use his final power.

Subconscious Invasion: With enough strength stored up from his Fear Consumption power, Negan will be able to go into a meditative state and actually send his consciousness into the consciousness of another. This will not take them over or anything, but he will be a sort of backseat passenger in their brain, getting to talk to and interact with their inner voice. Negan will not be able to search their mind for their deepest, darkest secrets...he can only know what a person allows to creep into their thoughts. So a character with a strong mind can keep things focused and lock nagging thoughts out whereas a character who worries might slip up and think things accidentally like ‘I hope he can’t see that time I went to class naked’ or something.

If he spends enough time in someone’s mind, he might be able to convince them that he is actually their thoughts. A sort of new way to make people ‘become Negan’ so to speak. But going outside of himself will take a lot of strength from him and leave him drained for days. So at most, he will only be able to do this once a week with substantial stores of fear. And in order to recover, he will either need to sleep it off or go out and start consuming more fear.

Ho. Ly. Shit.

[ The first words that come out of Negan’s mouth as he stares into the video screen. ]

Look at the goddamn technology here! Like a damn mini TV right in the palm of my hands. Sure as shit beats walkie talkies, that’s for damn sure.

[ He grins, cants his head to the side and swings a barbed wire bat up to rest against his shoulder. ]

Anyway. The name’s Negan. This here... [ He nods to the bat. ] is Lucille. And we are honored to make your acquaintance.

You’ll have to bear with me. S’been a while since I’ve been in a civilized society. Lots of rules I gotta remember and readjust to accordingly. Don’t kill people -- that’s a big one. Not that I bet all you other fellow superheroes abide by that one. Like, I bet we all can agree -- there’s definitely a time and a place to kill people, a wrong way and a right way. But that’s an argument for another time.

[ He waves it off dismissively. ]

So, like, speaking of this whole superhero thing. What’s the deal with that? Should I be makin’ a costume? Comin’ up with a superhero name and shit? Hey, here’s a fun idea! Why don’t you throw out some names for me? I’ll pick from the best. Hell, if you wanna talk about the name you picked for yourself, that’s fine and dandy, too. Color me interested.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:

Upon first arrival, Negan wasn’t sure what to think. He was fairly sure he was having some weird dream. After all, he was in a pretty bad state when he got captured by Rick and his gang. Wouldn’t be off the table to be passed out in la la land, dreaming about superheroes and civilized society. Except this felt too real. He was too present. Too aware. And too stunned, walking around the streets in a daze. He heard the murmurs of people, living people, and was shocked to see so many going about their business -- talking on phones, to each other, sipping coffee on the run.

Negan rubbed his eyes as though he could clear away the dream -- as though all of those people were nothing more than hallucinations and would turn into the dead when he blinked. They didn’t.

So, Negan continued to walk forward -- grabbing someone’s burger they had already taken a bite out of and eating it himself. The man called out after him in surprise before cursing out imPorts in general, but ultimately Negan paid him no mind. Worst case scenario this was a dream. Best case scenario this was real. And if this was real, Negan had a chance to establish himself to power again. That was the biggest fuck you to Rick he could give.

With a bit of a spring in his step, Negan polished off the burger -- wiping his hand on his pants before he turned sudden directions, heading into the local bank. He barged in with bluster, Lucille materializing in his hands. “Alright, people! Now I know, you all were going about your day like usual. And I am sorry for the shit luck you had winding up in here. But I’m gonna need you all to line up for me. On the floor. On your knees, like a heavenly dick’s about to float down onto your face. And I mean, I guess Lucille’d take that as a compliment if you thought of her that way.”

He chuckled after his comment, sparing a glance fondly toward his bat before his expression sobered suddenly and he slammed Lucille down on the counter. “On the floor! NOW!!”

FINAL NOTES: Negan will be coming straight from the end of the season 8 finale where he’s in recovery after getting his throat sliced open. But I plan on having him be healed up completely when he gets into game, so I assume that means he took a nice trip to the hospital and got fixed! And even though he wasn’t wearing it at the time, his leather jacket and red scarf will be coming with him, too.
